Nakum Archaeological Site
Nakum is an active Archaeological site, and is not visited by tourists very often. While Tikal gets thousands of visitors per week, I was the first visitor to Nakum in 3 weeks. As you can see here this is what the temples look like before recovery, the trees and plants all but hide the Maya remains.
Scaffolding has been erected to assist the archaeologists in the restoration.
This observatory has been fully restored. It is one of the few times where arches are used in the construction of a building in Maya civilization. The slits at the top were used to observe and record astronomical events.

Patio 5 is decorated with mythological figures wearing masks.

The inside of the patio is made of thick walls and not enough room, for me, to stand up in.

This is what the remaining engravings look like. The plaster on the inside has managed to fend off the centuries of mold, moisture and rot pretty well.

Another outside view.

A window only just big enough for a child to crawl through provided a great view of the outside during ancient times.
